Post subject:  Leggy branches in Scot Pine

Hello Friends,

I have got this scot pine, which I believe is quite healthy from the looks of it and has a fantastic fat trunk with nice movement.

However it has leggy branches and if I want to cut back to style it, I think I have no option. I had this tree for three years and all these branches were there when I bought it. I assume these branches ( the smooth ones ) would be at least six years old? My question is Will the Scot Pine ever back bud on those branches. Is my only option to do some grafting?

Many Thanks for suggestions and advise.

Is there a few years between these photos? The second photo doesn't look as lively as the first. To get back buds the tree needs to be vigorous and healthy. You also need to get light into the inner branches. How long has it been in this little pot?
If it's not vigorous I would slip pot it in spring and then feed well through the year . Possibly also just clear 2 or 3 branches which are not required near the apex to get some light inside.

Hello Richardb, the second picture is the inside look of the tree meant to show branches. The first picture was taken this summer and currently the same. Also it is in large barrel planter not a small planter.
