Hi folks! Happy New Year!!

Well, I can’t believe what a mild December we had and first few days of January following suit. And now some of the maples I put in my shed, have buds that are starting to swell! A couple of my hawthorns outside are swelling too! I have this dilemma every year - should I bring everything outside to slow them down? And move them back if / when we get colder weather.

There’s no way we won’t get some extended cold and frosty weather is there? What do you guys all do?

I've got quite a few (multiple species) with swelling buds. I find though that even with swelling buds those buds will not come out for some time yet. I think it's a combination of warmth and daylight length that causes them to emerge, so it doesn't actually vary that much year to year. If delicate refined trees do emerge and hard frost is forecast then you could move them in overnight but other than that I would leave them be, to do what nature guides.

I have noticed that the flower buds on my Fugi Cherries, which are left outside, are starting to swell.

It’s mad isn’t it? So mild .... But we know there will be a cold snap - it always happens with British weather. Probably be around April and we’ll lose all our nice new spring growth.

Toying with the idea of doing some thread graft’s on my maples because as soon as the buds start swelling, I’m not going to be able to oust the shoots through the trunk.

The buds have already burst on my chojubai, and some have started on my pseudocydonia. Will these need to be protected now? Also I was hoping to repot the pseudocydonia. Should I go for it now?

In my garden I have, snowdrops, crocus, daffodil, pulmonaria, Christmas roses, primroses, camellia.
, forsythia and snapdragons all in flower. Everything is about six weeks early. The blackthorn is out as well and hazel catkins in the hedgerows. We've only had about half a dozen frosts since November and only a couple of times it stayed frosty all day.

I am looking at the list of trees being exhibited at the Swindon show on the 23rd, it should be a colourful event with some of the trees in flower......... if the owners can control them with the fine weather. Fingers crossed

The pomegranate in my potting shed is showing tiny specks of green. I've given it a stern talking to and told it to go back to sleep! Trouble is, all its chums in the shed are on the move as well...

Just had a quick check of whats going on in in my lean to greenhouse and one of my maples is coming into leaf. I had an air layer on this which hadn't really thrown out roots so i had decided to give it a bit of winter protection. Hopefully this will carry on being healthy through whats left of the winter, the greenhouse tends to keep to a minimum of zero irrespective of whats going on outside.I also have a heat mat in here with trays of cuttings so it does keep a bit of heat in here.
