Your maple is further along than all of mine, Richard. What is it? Looks like it might be a Katsura? I’ve got nothing showing on any of my maples yet - other than my Shishigashira which is just splitting the buds - but my hawthorns are really cracking on! |

I recovered this from a friend who had given up on bonsai put the air layer on because there was a massive deep wire mark mid way up the trunk. I need to identify the type, typically orange / yellowish leaves. |

Have any of you started repotting yet? Buds have birst on my crab apple and are ready to pop on all six JMs. I'm going to start with the crabbie tomorrow. Prepared a few buckets of soil already this weekend. |

Everything is popping buds in my garden . I guess along with the mild weather the amount of light we are getting is telling everything to wake up . I'm still worried that we are getting frosts in March so repoting this early could be a problem . i guess if you have a green house then this isnt a problem . I have blossom om my plumb tree at the allotment as it is behind glass ( just a rouge root that has turned into a tree in my green house .) |

I repotted a couple of hazel today and also a swamp cypress. The buds were full and this gets me in front a little. They are now under protection so should be ok.the next 2 weeks are not predicting frosts for me. |

I Did 3 of my elms last week, 2 Chinese and a cork bark. the 2 chinese didnt drop their leaves over winter this year and just carried on growing regardless of mother nature, but the cork bark did and it started waking up end of Jan. they are now sat in a heated propagator base without the lid until it warms up a bit just in case. I took cuttings of the cork bark elm in the summer, they kept their leaves over winter, have budded and are extending nicely, only now are the old leaves showing sign of yellowing a bit. Im waiting a while before i do the rest that need re potting (mainly pines) but i had a peek earlier and a few jbp buds are literally just starting to elongate a fraction which is defiantly earlier than this time last year on the same tree, all the rest are still asleep....above ground at least! Its defiantly been a mild winter season where i am but im fairly certain that its not over yet so im going to be cautious with my less bullet prof tree species! |

That's interesting about your elms, I have one CE that keeps most of its leaves in winter here so it sounds like the UK winter has been more like Spanish than typical British. But the buds on mine are not yet swelling, probably will be ready to repot in March. My English elm, also no sign of bud swell yet. |

I brought a tree into my dining room about half an hour ago to do a bit of re-wiring, went to make a cup of coffee and came back to find a very wide-awake (and rather cross) ladybird making its way across the dining table towards the window. It's a bit early for them, isn't it? I have released it back into the wild. |

Pity it flew! Ladybirds make a great addition to a bonsai! They keep it free of mealybugs etc. |
