Post subject:  Pruning - Opposite & alternate leaf growth

Hi all,

I recall reading something around where the best place to trim growth and for the life of me, I can't find it again.

The article mentioned the different growth patterns (alternate and opposite) and recomended that one be cut in a different place to the other to prevent damaging the stem and future growth.

Just wondering if anyone has any views on this?

Thanks

S

With alternate growth, make sure you trim above a bud that is pointing in the direction you want the next branch to develop. Leave at least two viable buds on any branch section if you want ramification.

With opposing growth, you'll normally get two shoots from the bud pair you've trimmed back to.

With either type, make your cut a small distance above the bud (5mm+) to allow for dieback - clean it up once the stub has dried off.
