Hi Guys, I joined the forum last year and have been lurking ever since. I realise that time plays an important part in producing desired results and as I have a few pots I was wondering about tips to maximise growth prior to the bonsai stage. Is it just my normal feeding two or three times a season and should I have the plants in a particular size pot? I've always just increased the diameters when they looked ready for an upgrade . I also asked last yr about air layering from one of six or seven beeches that form a hedge. I remember being asked about my plans for the next phase which I don't have though it seems a shame not to have a go on one at this time of year. Are there certain criteria for selection ? I also have a nice Kojo No Mai in flower. Any tips on that? Any help gratefully received. |

No harm in trying an air layer. The worst that can happen is it fails and even then you learn something. I bought three Kojo's and asked the usual questions. the answer that seems to be the most important is to seal any cuts thoroughly to prevent canker. As to maximising growth, I am sure you will get plenty of answers suggesting ground growing for a number of years. |

Kojos - beautiful trees in flower. They don't grow very big so you've got what you've got trunk wise unless you stick them in the ground for quite a while. They like to be shaded as they tend to suffer in full sun. General pre-bonsai growth for size. Put them in the ground (so much quicker). Every year keep the higher branches small/tiny and the lower ones big/free-growing so the growth occurs more at the bottom. This creates taper. Check the roots every 2-3 years to remove oversized or ugly ones. |

I'd be feeding more than two or three times a season . I do that per month and most trees have constant food that gets released when i water . Planning the next stage is something im always asked and like you i dont really have one . I guess you can try to plan but the tree will do what it wants and you have to work with that so its constantly changing . |

Well I'll up the feeding regime anyway. I think The trunk has a good shape (he said knowingly). |
