Post subject:  Repotting an Azalea

Hello all,

As it's early spring I was thinking about repotting my azalea but have been told to wait until it has flowered even though I'm in a temperate climate (UK). Should I wait until it has flowered or go ahead and repot it now? Thanks.

Ideal time is june, after flowering.

I think there are two main reasons for this.
1. Its nice to see the flowers and not diminish them in any way by working the tree until the flowers have passed.
2. For evergreens the principles for root work differ to deciduous trees. For them it's better to get the tree actively growing to facilitate the regrowth of roots after repotting.

Thanks for the additional information, very interesting.

One more thing, my azaleas have superfine roots, you can't do the same kind of root pruning that you do on most other trees. Need to keep a good portion of the existing rootball and any combing just seems to break off the fine roots. Maybe others here have had a better experience but I haven't been successful in getting a flat radial root system.

Repotting after flowering came from Japan, where the rainy season starts immediately after satsuki flowering. If you live in for example Madrid and during that period of the year it is very dry and humidity is low, better not repot. Or not repot into 100% kanuma.

I'd repot at the same point as the tree leaves dormancy AND frost is no longer an issue.

I'd repot in 100% kanuma if you can do so and if there is lots of rain or you will do lots of watering. I'd mix in peat, the coarser the better, if the weather is dryer to have more of a soil property rather than a substrate property. Azalea roots can either be watter sogged, or be damaged if they dry out completely. This is why kanuma is so great when you have the rainy season during summer. But not everyone has. And kanuma is dirt cheap because it is the local dirt and in Europe you have to import it.

I will keep that in mind when I do some repotting, thanks bluesky. Also thank you Harunobu something else to think about.
