In my garden there's a mature cherry blossom tree, and I'm intending to remove a few branches to tidy it up a bit, if I cut one off cleanly that was about 3" diameter, and capped it at about 2' height, what are the chances of it taking root and turning into a mini tree?

I would say zero. Your best bet would be to air layer. Not sure on others success but I had 2 out of 2 failures with cherry trees.

I have various prunus cerasifera (cherry plum) growing in my garden both green and nigra. They grow like weeds. About 3 years ago just before bud break I managed to snap the 2 inch trunk on one I was trying to bonsai, left it 24 hours then changed my mind, wrapped the base in sphagnum and stuck it in cat litter and it rooted no problem. It seems incredibly easy to root - on a par with privet in my experience.

Generally I'd say no chance, like Richard, and I don't know if other prunus behave like cherry plum but why not try. You'll either gain a tree or experience. Make sure it's secure and shaded and doesn't dry out and don't have too many expectations. Of course an air layer is a better bet.

Thanks guys, by air layering do you mean from a suitably thick branch rather than the main trunk?

Up to you but if the tree is big, air layering a branch will be more likely to yield a bonsai sized tree and leave the original tree still looking nice.

If you don't ask you don't get, and shy kiddies get no sweeties.

I think I knew the answer already but thought I'd ask just in case, air layer a branch it is then.

I trimmed some long shoots, about a foot long, off a Fuji Cheery last year and put them in a tall rose plant pot. I wasn't over hopeful so I wasn't disappointed when nothing happen and I threw them in the green bin last week. However as Gary say's, nothing to loose by trying.

I've finally picked my branch to air layer but can't get my hands on any moss at the moment, is there an alternative that I could use please?

You can adapt a plastic nursery pot to attach to the branch and use bonsai soil. I’m sure potting compost will also work. You will have to keep it watered like a bonsai - too dry and the roots may perish, too wet too often and roots won’t form.
