Bought some low dust cat litter from Tesco in March and it was the same size as Sanicat. It used to be tiny granules.

I’ve been using cat litter ever since I started bonsai which I think was over 15 years ago. The only reason I ever used it was because I couldn’t afford akadama. Over the years I have lost bonsai the same as most but I don’t put it down to the cat littler more down to my inexperience with horticulture. That being said I have now started to use akadama, more as a top layer on most but on some I use pure akadama. Why the change? Somebody told me my trees are to good to be in cat litter! Why that convinced me to change I don’t know. It’s still on trial for me. I do find it drys out quicker than cat litter which is ok on some trees at certain times of the year but will worry me in the summer months. Time will tell.

Do you use a moss top dressing Darren? I find it helps. (and is also a contentious issue)

On a couple of trees I do have some moss on them but not on all. I find the Pesky birds rip it up but that’s probably my fault as I encourage wildlife into my garden :132doh:

That's fair enough

Cat litter and moss in the same thread - two contentious issues - it's a brave move.

I have never used Tesco's finest, it was sanicat and it didn't break down, it was still granular. It seemed to be almost a jelly type makeup very wet and mixed with what I suppose was solid feed particles which had washed down through the soil.

The description you use of it being granular but jelly-like makes me wonder whether you had used one of the half-dozen or so other types of Sanicat rather than the moler clay one, because I've used it for several years, and never come across anything remotely like that, nor with the oil spill stuff that I use as well.

I have, on the other hand, purchased a number of brands of cat litter for its intended feline purpose and what you describe sounds much more like what happens to regular cat litter when wet.

Yes you do need to be careful when buying molar clay cat litter as there are often products which look similar in the picture on the packaging but turn out to be completely unsuitable. The Sanicat is ‘Sanicat Pink’.
Interesting article here about various sources for molar clay granules:

I have not tried Seramis always being put off by the price but I know a lot of EU cactus growers use it as it seems to be a lot cheaper across the channel.
When the lockdown subsides a little I am going to try the new Tesco product as I have noticed the price of Sanicat has crept up quite steadily and the last 30L cost me £14. Is the new Tesco version still labelled as ‘Low dust’?

Akadama seems to be around £18 - £22 for 14 litres. I bought seramis at £42 for 30 litres. Yes, more expensive than Akadama and considerably more than CL but you know it was produced for horticultural purposes and therefore will not damage a tree ( worth ££??) and will last for innumerable years without breaking down.

Shop around you can get akadama for less than that and the good stuff. Well you could before this lock down.

My last sack of akadama I think was 13 pounds.

What the club does is invite a trader to do a shop during a meeting and then they pre order so it keeps the price down.

Prior to that we used to order via Fobbs [Federation of British bonsai] as they would order a lorry load to be distributed. Just meant that someone had to travel a bit to collect it.
