Hi

Has anyone else experience the bark cracking and coming away from their Chinese Elm?

Elm bark develops beautiful fissures as it ages. Has the tree been allowed to grow very vigorously lately? Definitely don’t remove it. The other possibility is there is dead wood underneath.

I purchased the tree about five years ago and the label said it was eight years +, however I think it is much older than that. I bought it as a neglected tree from a garden centre, complete with a large dead branch, poor soil and a cracked pot. It started to come on fine after a repot etc but last year it didn't look very happy. I slip potted it into a large terracotta plant pot with good drainage and it threw out lots of growth. Although a couple of small branches have died off but I suspect they were on their way out from last year.

On giving it a trim back yesterday I noticed how cracked and lifted the bar was. The reason that potion of bark has gone/removed is because it was already away from the trunk and water was getting down inside making it soft.

The deadwood theory is also mine and I hope the tree isn't on its way out.
