Hi All

I just collected this little beech from a quarry near me. It was basically a matter of having to grab it by the trunk and pull it out as it was about to be driven over.

Luckily the roots were shallow and the soil sandy, so I got quite a lot of both thick roots and feeder roots.

I popped it into a pot and its in the shade to recover. It's been in the pot a week and the leaves are more turgid now than in the pic, so here's hoping it will survive.

It has a really nice white bark and I'd be grateful for an ID?

Not planning on doing anything to it at all this season, apart from feeding it starting in about a week.

White bark and kite shaped leaves. Hmmm....... methinks Betula knows his betulas.

Sometimes life's a beech - but other times not! :07hysterical:

Enjoy your new silver birch.

Or if it's collected from the wild in the south then IIRC more likely to be Downy Birch, Betula Pubescens. Are the new shoots and leaves slightly furry or shiny? Furry = downy, shiny = silver

Funny thing is in my mind I was saying birch but my fingers typed beech. Locked down too long.

It is not a downy birch as I have one of them. So thanks, it seems I have a Silver birch Betula pendula.

Thanks to the collective! (PS I'll re-name this post)
