Post subject:  Pot temperature question.

Hello there,

This is my first year keeping bonsai and I have many more questions than answers at this stage.

I have two bonsai trees (a ficus retusa & Chinese elm) and two potential bonsai trees (a collected stump of an English oak & a yamadori Sabina juniper)

My question is regarding the Chinese elm. This tree is planted in typical blue glazed pot and I ensure it gets a good bit of morning sun on a sunny day. After a couple of hours (around 11:30am) I have checked the temperate with a probe touching the inside of the pot and found it to be approaching 40.c
This concerned me and I have started using a coco basket liner with a slit cut out to act as a shaded dome around the pot (only) in direct sun. This keeps a nice cool 20.c or so.

My garden is full of pots and I am confident in looking after these but not a bonsai sized pot. The other tress I have; ficus is indoors, oak and Sabina, are in larger pots so less of a concern.
It took a bit of getting used to watering the juniper as it is incredibly root bound but the pot doesn’t suffer higher temps like the elm. I didn’t really want to rush into reporting anything until I familiarise myself with the tree.

Am I on the right track, wording about nothing or is there a better way ?

You help is greatly appreciated.

I am keen to share photos but I keep hitting a wall when trying to upload them.

Thanks for reading...

Not many answers on this one. You will find on the net info on which trees prefer full sun and others that don't. Also correct watering is probably the most important and understanding both in high summer temps and also cold wet winters what is suitable. Also remember that evaporation causes heat loss. I have also attached a worthwhile read.

One hack is to lean a piece of ply or other board against the pot to provide shade to the pot while allowing the foliage to remain in the sun.

That and more hacks here:
