I don't know why I bought this really. I knew hazel have large leaves and aren't really ideal, but it was reduced, and as usual, I was attracted to the red leaves :132doh: . I had to chop it in half to get it in the car, then picked a new top. I worked it quite hard, and only two years later I plonked it into a large plastic bonsai pot I had, and I feel like the leaves aren't too far off scale. I don't know if it's really worth developing it further, but I think I need to keep sharing what I've been doing so I can get some feedback, and learn from it. I know I need to wire my trees much more. Hopefully with some gentle refinement in future years it'll look better anyway

Looking good. I would try and get some heavy wire on the 2 lower branches and get some movement in them before they get to stiff. I have 3 hazels and the leaves on the oldest have reduced nearly 50%. I have also found that thread grafting has worked well to get some new branches lower down or in empty spaces.

I like it. Good progress. Like Richard I'd suggest wiring those lower branches and would bring them up also with the aim of beefing them up a lot so you can build a nice strong canopy. A little bit of pruning on the apex and keeping it under control whilst you develop the lower branches would be good IMHO.

Nice tree- Turkish hazel Corylus colurna is usually green and is popular as a street tree due to its upright conical growth up to 25 metres tall.
Do you know which cultivar this is? I cant read the label on your original photo!!

Thanks for the feedback. I've been hesitant to wire much, I've managed to break a few branches :( I think, including this tree. Guess I need to bite the bullet, but be more careful!

Cultivar is "Te Terra Red"
