Post subject:  Chinese Elms- Strange foliage!

Hi all

I have four or five Chelms (And a cutting from last year!), Two of them came out with very strange coloured foliage in spring, The tips of the serrated edges to the leaves are white!, There's also white streaks through the leaves too!

One is a normal Chionese Elm, The other is a Corkbark Elm that i've had for fifteen years, It's never done this before!!

The Corkbark..

A close up of the foliage, The newer leaves in the centre don't seem to come with the white but they get it quite quickly, There's more on the outer edges of this pic!

The normal one now.

The little white edges can be seen ok here!

They normally come out fresh bright green and harden off to a nice deep green but these two have stayed very pale, It's strange!

Anyone know what's caused it? Or seen it before as I never have, The trees are growing vigerously, I've had to trim them back a couple of times already!!

Hi

Varigated trees are created with a virus (Not coronavirus!), so perhaps this elm has picked up some sort of varigation virus?

Good Morning!
Its possibly a virus or phytoplasma.
The other possible causes are frost damage - combined with sun-scorch following the recent cold nights we experienced.
Theres been lot of recent frost damage on plants here in the midlands.
After you cut back is the new growth still showing symptoms or has it grown out of the problem?

I've had this on a couple of mine over the years, and struggled to find an answer. I had it on one tree for 3 years or so (it's gone now). I think it was due to poor conditions in the pot at the time - too much root, not enough nutrients / minerals.

My cork bark chinese elm has done the same this year although not to quite the same degree as yours. Hasnt done it before. Its not been in direct sunlight this year although it is in a very bright area. Its in need is a good trim back so I'm doing that this weekend and hopefully that might help. Think I'll give it some direct sunlight as well. With any luck the new foliage might not have it.

I have the same issue - one CE out of say 5.

Seems to affect old and new leaves.

Hi Betula

We've not really had any frost although the trees have both been out through winter!

The new growth comes out pale green but no white, The white seems to be happening soon after though whilst still not hardened off!
