Post subject:  The Art of Re-Potting

Excuse me for my ignorance.
When it comes to re-potting (Chinese Elm)
After teasing out the roots do I remove all of the soil in the root ball
Do I remove only a partial amount and loosen up the rest.
How much of the root system can I safely reduce at one time.
Advice on this aspect would be gratefully appreciated
Regards
C

If the re potting is done at the right time of year then you can remove all the old soil and sort out the roots [Feb/March] before the tree starts budding out.

This will help you, there are 3 pages ........... http://bonsai4me.com/Basics/Basics_Repotting2.html

Like most questions in bonsai, the answer really depends how healthy the tree is and also what you are trying achieve by repotting.

If the tree is super vigorous and putting on long extensions then you can get away with so much more, but general consensus is 1/3rd of the roots can be removed. But only if no other major work has been done and providing its the right time of year, i.e early spring.

You don't have to remove all the soil, the main thing is that the roots have room to grow and the soil drains ok. you can achieve that by cutting off thick woody roots, loosening compacted areas, cutting some root off the edges of the root ball, poking holes through compacted areas, etc.

If you really must do it, not reccommended considering its now summer, just tease the edges out slightly, cut them back to fit in your new pot with 10mm gap for some soil to fit and keep in shade for a while until you can see it growing.
