A little more maintenance this week. I wanted to do this all in one go last week but didn't have the correct tool at my disposal.
As suggested last time the inside branch has been removed and a few little nodes here and there and some vaseline applied until proper cut paste arrives. The small wounds seemed to cauterize fairly quickly.
The main pic is how the tree is looking at the moment (I wish to leave this well alone now) It is sprouting new leaves here and there but not running rampant. perhaps this is due to having to slip pot it from the get-go due to the postal affair and it may be still recovering. I have fed it twice in about 4 weeks with Bonsai Focus at the recommended dosage. I will re-pot the tree in the spring. I have placed the cuttings in some water just in case they sprout roots. Maybe I'll get something maybe I won't.
I'm fairly pleased with the situation thus far if a little impatient that it's not running wild and wondering if I'm doing something wrong. As mentioned before this is not the best tree in the world but it's in my charge so I want to look after it and practice basic tasks to make it look nice, even if its only to my eye. Officinadoes will have a different train of thought but again its not a show tree.
On the lower branch photo on the left, I am not getting any growth on the right-hand side of the branch, except for one solitary leaf. is there anything I can do to fill this side of the intended pad.
Criticism again if you may guys......

Hi

one way to encourage growth on one side is to keep that side to the light.

Where do you keep it? it will grow faster if it is outside.

It's kept outside.
So you reckon rotating it may help?

Could I also suggest that you keep all your posts relating to one tree in the same thread? It makes it much easier for people to follow and see the history of your work on it and the advice and discussions about its progress. And it means you can look back in 6 months time and see what progress you have made :smallthumb:

Definitely agree with Daryl on keeping it all in one thread.

I'd leave it alone now, to grow and get strong. Yes, advice thoughts and comments could be made, but the best advice I think is to not mess too much and let the tree be really healthy and looking almost over grown before you prune or style it again. I'd say a September clean, prune and wire would be about right (unless it does go bananas and grow crazily) and then leave it until next spring.

It's not growing as fast as you would like for two reasons 1. You're impatient :203pokey: 2. The tree needs to build a powerful root system and also recover from work done to it.

You've done nothing wrong and it looks healthy but just let it be so it can grow happily for a bit. Stare at it every day and plan your next move for sure but let it grow. Bonsai development is grow and chop cycles, not chop-chop cycles. Sometimes you can look at a tree for months thinking one way and then suddenly a great idea just suddenly comes to you.

Apologies Daryl. I see your point.
A word on watering if I may.
The water at the tap in my area is fairly hard and alkaline up to near pH 8.
Should I use water from the pond which is a little more acidic?

Wise words again Gary, appreciated.

Yes - collected rain water in whatever form is better. Tap water will have to do if you can't get hold of rain water.

Thanks again Gary.
I have the pond as one source and water butts collection for fish breeding.
Comes out very soft low dKH and circa pH 5.5

I think my watering and feeding regime is going OK
Lots of new growth on my Chinese Elm, which I'm very pleased about.
Although the Arachnids love the openness of the branches to build their webs.
