That looks interesting . It might be myrtle. Do you get a strong smell from the leaves if you rub them? |

daryl wrote: That looks interesting . It might be myrtle. Do you get a strong smell from the leaves if you rub them? Just found it daryl using a phone plant identifier app it is apparently. Leptospernum scoparium https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptospermum_scoparium Which is what the GC guy said it was lepto something. So you were correct in your asumption that it was a form of Myrtle It has a dark red flower which have subsequently dropped. so could be "Red Damask" var. ..Ruby Glow or similar (hoping so) Looking forward to reading up on this plant New Zealand TEA TREE some nice bonsai examples here https://www.google.com/search?q=leptospermum+scoparium+bonsai&tbm=isch&rlz=1C1CHWA_enGB624GB624&hl=en&ved=2ahUKEwjug4LqltfqAhUK2xoKHbR1AIIQrNwCKAF6BQgBEJsC&biw=1349&bih=657 Thanks again for your time in replying it is always very much appreciated. Its not easy to turn into a bonsai and there are many more at the garden centres that will make your life easier. Try small leafed cotoneaster, pyracantha or lonicera. If you cut off the wrong bit you can usually re grow. |

I have read many articles and most lean towards the difficult, but can be done so long as you take things really slow. Such as performing too much refinement all at once. Roots very little disturbance... I was just going to slip pot it into a large training pot with no/little disturbance Pruning again very little (a long game approach) Wiring apparently they take well to being wired. It might have to be taken into the greenhouse on occaision. It was only £5 so I'm nothing out to have a go What you guys think??? Regards C |

My time in bonsai has taught me that the species that are popular in Bonsai are so for a good reason. They generally grow quicker and are more forgiving when we make mistakes or perform stressful operations on them. Other species are generally for the more experienced or should be treated as learning curves. I have got frustrated at many "unsuitable for Bonsai" trees in my time, killing time or trees in the process. However its only £5 so hardly a big loss if it doesn't go as hoped. Have fun. |
