Evening all,

Looking for a bit of advice with regards to my wee hazelnut tree. I can't seem to get this wee fella to back bud very much. I pinched new growth near the start of the summer and been feeding it throughout the summer but as you can see there isn't too much in the way of back budding. The leaves are way too big as a result.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Where did this come from?? Not like a hazel to me. The leaf is very similar to a Mirbecks oak !!

Also hazel tend to put out leaves alternately ,one left , one right. Your picture is also similar to how oaks put out leaves on new shoots.

Hey Richard,

I got it a few years ago from a family member. It was grown from seed and marked with a label as hazelnut.....I was also given a chestnut at the same time. Would another picture help id this?

Here's my advice from someone else's post:

Quote:
Have you tried leaf cutting as a reduction technique? I have successfully reduced the leaf size in two notoriously difficult species, Common Maple / Acer Campestre and Corylus avellana / Common Hazel.

I cut the biggest leaves down to just slightly smaller than the size I want the leaves to be. Just a snip with the scissors so the leaf remains roughly leaf shaped. The leaves work perfectly well with the snip. But it causes the tree to back bud nicely. What's more, as new leaves grow I snip them too. Keep doing this and more and more leaves appear. Also, the snipped leaves grow bigger, too - so you may need to trim them again.

Just keep snipping them all smaller. Eventually the tree produces leaves at that size.

The reason I suspect this works is that a given surface area of leaves is needed for a given size of tree. The tree is lazy and wants to make 2 - 3 leaves. By forcing it to grow 20 leaves to acheive that surface area where it previously grew 3 then that's when you programme it and pretty soon that's how it grows. I think 3 - 4 seasons was all it took on my smallest Acer Campestre.

Only thing I'd say is that it is quite late in the season for you to do this across a whole tree. I'd select one of your main branches and do all the leaves on that branch this season - just to see what happens. Then next season you can try it across the whole tree. Once the new leaves start to harden off in spring you do your first reduction cuts.

Yes, sweet chestnut. Massive leaves. Not usually used in Bonsai for that reason. If you manage to reduce them, brilliant. I think it's too late for partial defoliation. You're more likely to weaken the tree than anything else IMHO (not fatally of course). But you can give it a try and let us know what happens.
