I'm going to buy a Juniper at the weekend from the local garden centre any thoughts on species to look out for and
what am I looking for when buying one of these from GC stock.
Regards
C

I had a similar idea so I'll keep an eye on this.

Take a look at http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Juniperus.html
B4me is always a good source for genus specific advice.

Not much doing on in Dobbies today for by our free Cappuccinos

Picea albertiana conica
Juniperius compressa

Large GC's get stock in young and just sell it as soon as they can. Try and find a smaller family run business where stock has been hanging around for years.
Also see when the club will be doing their next ramble in the hills looking for Yamadori [Rough dug] usually collected in Autumn or Spring.

Just a note of caution not to buy too many in general. I ended up with three hundred trees in my first couple of years and now my garden is overflowing, my allotment is full to the edges and it takes me a lot of time to look after them all and I have't the heart to throw any away. In the last few years I've stopped getting new material and so it's not getting worse but it's still very busy.

Blue Alps, chinensis, blauuws, squamata all make good bonsai but its almost impossible to find anything with thick trunks. Still fun though
