I've just bought some more GC practice material subject to availability.
This time it was an Alberta Spruce Picea albertiana conica
It's small but has a nice upright shape.
Upon reading somewhat about this species it appears that the branches are not very conforming when its been wired
(mabe it takes a longer time to set looser wire applied for a longer period) I don't know.
What I do know is from the Google images they make beautiful upright bonsai (in the right hands lol)
and apparently hard to KILL ;-)
Has any of the membership had experience with this species, I'd love to hear your views.

I had one and managed to kill it quite easily. I think I might have done too much root work in my eagerness to get it into a smaller pot ::dunno:

Don't do too much pruning in one go, they also don't like small pots but good to practice on.

A lot have multiple branches coming from one point, so that has to be addressed or else you will get a bigger growth on the trunk in that area

They seem to grow well and vigorously but you have to handle them well. Definitely don't over do any root work and like the others I've found a larger pot helps.

Here's one I got in 2015 and did some extensive root work to (big mistake)

and a year later only just alive (thanks to the root work)

and another year on the first signs of recovery

and now three years after that - back to a healthy tree and starting again.

I've found the branches to set pretty well of you let the wire bite in a bit, they heal wounds quite nicely too. And grow and backbud well. the difficult bit is getting a structure you're happy with

Mine had terrible roots and after I tried some more serious rootwork it dried up, went to the big bonsai forest in the sky.
