Hi can anyone tell me when japanese larch start turning yellow. My group setting has just started changing and I'm not sure if its a bit early or its not happy. Is this normal ? Thanks in advance Wendy |

I'd say that’s quite early. Mine are all still very fresh and green and still putting out new growth. The only ones which have slight colour change are just a few needles browning which is most likely because it has been hot, dry and windy. You are quite a bit further north than me so someone nearer you might have a different experience. |

Thanks for replying Daryl. We had some extreme heat and i think it may be that. However the ones that are yellowing also have a few new shoots. Do these larches do better in the shade or partial shade? |

Again, just answering from my own experience, but mine are all in full sun but the one I have had in the shade for the last 3 months (because I tried to air layer the top) has a richer green colour. |

I bought this group this season and don't know its history. My other trees are really healthy (I've had lots more time recently as we all have) It feels very pot bound. Its now in the shade !!! Darryl which platform do you use to load pictures as im really struggling only on this forum |

Agreeing with Daryl and speaking generally about all species, the middle of summer can be a hard time for leaves with heat, sun and sometimes wind drying them out. Over the years I've had a few lose a lot of leaves during this period. It obviously weakens them (leaves produce the food trees need) but if they've had enough time beforehand to build up some reserves they can come back the following year. Maples can struggle as it seems do hornbeam and hawthorn (at least in my environment, which is a bit of a heat trap). Copious watering and/or shade/semi-shade are as you'd expect the answer. Many of us use IMGBB as a platform for pictures. Flickr is also popular. |

Then copy and paste the code(s) into your post and bingo - your pictures appear! Try it now with a picture of your larch ![]() |
