On a small standard "S" shaped Chinese Elm with an already established canopy (typical commercial import)
Can you take this on up and develop a new leader skyward hence establishing a new canopy
or are we governed by what is
Typical newbie question, looking to make a taller tree in the future maybe.
any advice greatly accepted

You can grow it upwards, but:
it will be several years to create a new crown and may take longer to look like a convincing tree while you fatten up the lower trunk.
And secondly some say the typical S shape looks contrived, it's a trick to help hide a taperless trunk. So it can be more satisfying to air layer some way up and create two smaller, more convincing trees. Elms are quite easy to air layer, and also, layering gives you an excellent start on a radial root base.

I listen to this all the time Blue.
and at some stage I may well conjure up the courage to perform such a task.
I'm fearful that this may result in a complete disaster.
I'd prefer to grow this one and perhaps buy another for a broom style and maybe a Cork Bark rather than attempt an air-layer at this stage in my learning process.
but I do get your point

As said, yes you can make it bigger but you're taking a few steps back in the development process so you'll need to commit time to it. A big pot or in the ground will enable it to grow the most quickly.

I have three 'S' shaped elms, they were just about my first ever trees about 10-15 years ago, when i thought that was how 'bonsai' were supposed to look!. In the time since i have grown dozens and dozens of trees, but still return the these once in a while for a trim , repot etc. They are now nice healthy trees, with dense foliage pads, so i am planning on giving them away. Someone who knows little about bonsai will hopefully treasure one of these examples, we all have to start somewhere!.

This was my cheap S-shape and what I did with it.

Ooooh!! That looks fab Gary!!

I've one from Morrisons that's coming along nicely, It's a straight up stick rather than an S shaped one, It just now exploding in to new foliage so hopefully will look more bushy by next year instead of being really sparse!! Pretty sure iot was just £5..

I did remove loads that I felt weren't needed but as ever, I forgot to take a before pic prior to butchering it!!

I just remembered, I do have an S shaped Chelm!, This was a tenner from Donny Bonsai Bootsale a year or two ago!!

I was thinking about removing the bottom branch then air layering it just about where the branch is as there's a nasty bend just below!! ;-)

More examples...

First one I bought about 15 years ago at a car boot sale. Scrawny little thing it was but it has gradually improved. The plan is to graft a piece on where the big scar is to make a new branch and disguise the wound a bit.

Image

This was an S shape but I repositioned it, changed the growing angle and cut it off at the second bend but keeping the branch that made the new leader for the cascade. You can see the shape it was and the cut scar healing over in the second picture

This one has grown enough canopy and lower branches to disguise the S shape. Second picture shows how strong the first bend was but it doesn’t really show much from a normal viewpoint
