Post subject:  First Bonsai Bench Concept

I have got to the point of feeding this addiction with my first purpose-built wooden bonsai bench. Its in the planning and collecting material stage but I have settled on the design below. Expansion is not an option as I only have limited space in front of the Greenhouse and around the pond area. The pond lends itself to a couple of trees but this will be for the area in front of the greenhouse.
I like working with wood but I dont want to overcomplicate the situation, keeping the build simple but effective. It should pave the way for around 2 or three good-sized trees with some Shohin and accents thrown in.
As you can see from the design it is effectively a garden bench planter. I will make it from 64x38mm stud wall battens adding some feet and internals to the boxes should I wish to plant something in there at a later date. For the time being It will have loose Yorkshire stone riven pavers both to top the planters and the main bench area
Being of a fairly small affair as suggested, the boxes will measure .400mm square allowing for the 450mm square pavers to overhang 25mm all around.
To break up the front of the planting boxes I plan to add some Japanese Kanji plaques to accentuate it a little more.
Its hard when you only have a certain amount of space at your disposal but this is the way it has to be without disturbing the rest of the garden scheme.
I will post some images in this thread of the build once its underway.

::lol:

Probably true to a certain extent guys.
I have see people with six-foot benches and they sure seem to cram a lot on there.
Anyway this is a parallell hobby to my main interest which is fishkeeping. Originally I wanted a few nice specimens (not specimens in a bonsai officinado sense) for to embelish my small pond area. Its kinda grew on me and I wanted to learn more. It's never going to get out of hand. The plan now is still to embelish the pond area (after re-vamp. next season now). and to have a nice display bench with 3 large trees, some kind of cascade (itoigawa juniper maybe) then a few shohin and accent plants to complete the scene. I dont need or have time for a large collection...

I decided to keep the bench simple for now. Please excuse the novice trees, I've a lot to learn.
Concrete Block and a couple of Railway type Sleepers, should hold around 10 nice trees eventually. Which would be enough for me to grow and learn.

I envisage another large tree possibly an English Oak, then filled in with Shohin Maples and the like.
with some dispursed Kusamono/Shitakusa accent attempts.

Looks good. And you can easily add a higher shelf in the future should your collection somehow grow.

Looks great!
I'm loving that large elm in the brown pot.
I will be creating a small bonsai garden here soon. I'll make a separate thread for it because I know I'm going to need advice from folks here.
Brendan made himself an excellent bonsai garden a couple of years ago.

Is this based on any scientific evidence or just hearsay

Two more sneaky purchases from the guy up the road.
Graftlings...a little something different.
Acer palmatum "Shishigashira" and Acer palmatum "Mikawa Yatsabusa"
