Hi all, I have 2 garden Acers (Katsura and Beni Maiko) in pots, they have been there for many years unattended/semi neglected except for watering, etc. Originally they were grafted GC stock trees but this has somewhat faded quite a lot now. Every year they put on a great autumnal show with their foliage, especially the Katsura. Their trunks have become fairly thick. Do you think with some expert help they could be turned into a couple of nice Bonsai trees? I think they are at the point now in need of a re-pot. Not sure what the root system is like but would like these to be turned into something for the bench, they don't have to be show stoppers. This would sure save me a lot of money if I got an expert in for some "one to one" sessions to enhance their development as I feel they are too good just to wile away the years in their existing pots. If so what is the best time of year to invite someone in to start initial work (shape, wire and re-pot) on these trees as I realise this will be a work in progress? Any advice guys. Pics to follow. |

I have 3 bonsai maple which were originally in a friend's garden. Trunks about 4 inch dia. First job is roots as these had roots up to 2 inch dia. Took 2 to 3 years to develop roots so I could get them into a pot and you need to be quite brutal with the heavy ones. Chances are you have no good branches low down so you then need to hope you get buds where you need them. Another option is look into the trees and find some suitable air layer points. Send a couple of photos |

Send a couple of photos Thanks for the reply Richard. appreciated as always. I'll surely post some images as soon as its brighter, Its raining here today and I suspect that yesterday may have been a better day to photograph. That said I think the Katsura may be the better of the two if the branch structure could be improved I'm feeling that its more compact, squat and has shorter internodes. Although I would still like some attention to be paid to the Beni Maiko whether it be an air layer or otherwise. Their trunks are nowhere near what you have (but still have good natural girth) and I will measure them when I take the photographs. I guess I'm just trying to save some money here if this can be done as I would like a large maple at some point and if I can utilise existing stock then all the better. I don't really want to have to sell a kidney at this moment in time (I cant think who would want one from a practicing alcoholic anyway) and equally I think having the term divorcee after my name would mean many self inflicted years of hardship hahahaha. Hopefully this may offer up a few solutions. A happy wife means a happy life as they say lol PS I cant afford a new tree never mind offer a compromise for the missus Can you also post up images of what you have done with yours? and what can be expected/achieved many thanks Regards C |

In my opinion its a lovely looking tree and judging by the pot that it is in, you may not have the same issue with large roots that Richard had. I can understand you being nervous with which branches to choose, I, and I am sure many others on here felt the same when we first started. However a second opinion is always good. |

Both cultivars should make excellent trees with slow reduction as long as the grafts aren’t too ugly. Lovely small leaves on both and stunning colours. |
