Is it safe for me to cut this tree into a triangular shape (removing all protruding branches outside the image) now then wait to Spring for further branch structuring The triangle shape is pretty much self evident from image below. Also how much root can I remove from an acer come Springtime.  Yes the leaves are on the large size, what's the best way to get reduction on size in maples. |

I would wait until several weeks after leaf fall i.e. until the tree is dormant. Right now all those leaves are still passing sugars back to the trunk, to store them in the trunk base and roots during dormancy.
