I bought a mallsai! After three months without a working car, I finally managed to fix it, so obviously one of the first things I did was go check out a couple of garden centres. I found this Chinese elm, thick trunk, healthy looking leaves. Quite pleased with finding it. What would you do with it? Broom? |

Nice. Would it air layer above the thick roots that currently form part of the trunk to make a super stubby broom? |

It's already a broom so making it the best broom possible is by far the simplest route. Anything else will involve a lot of development (effectively starting from scratch) so there would be little point. |

Hi Koren Way back I bought a Chinese Elm (Corkbark variety) that was in the broom style but it needed repotting, I didn't do it until it almost died Here's a few pics of how it looked. I ended up having to let the few branches that survived grow out some, Unfortunately I didn't take pics when it was nearly dead but I repotted it and the last two branches I wired slightly! The bark was starting to come away at the top of the trunk so I pulled at it and there was steel wire stuck inside!! This is as it is now, Only three fo;liage clouds but I fully expected it going in to the garden refuse!! Good luck with your tree, There's always something different you can do with them but it usually involves much time in the process!! I can recall a few times with my old mate Don (Stymie) at the club when he'd get a tree out that I thought was a beauty and he'd start hacking at it and to my eyes, It was ruined but they always bounced back ok! If they were mine they probably would have snuffed it!! John |

Koren, I too agree with what the others have said and it looks like you already have a broom style, or at least the makings of one. The one I bought in the Morrisons tree challenge looked like it would be a broom but it told me otherwise and I am sure your tree will dictate the style to you. John, my CE started to peel bark in the summer. If you are concerned about the health of yours why don't you plant it in the ground or a larger pot and allow free growth for a season or two? |

It seems ok Keith apart from this year the serrated edges of the leaves came out white!, I presume it's somekind of disease! It's ready for repotting so i'll do it next spring- Thanks I bought this little Chelm from Morrisons, The plantpot stood in a ceramic planter with no drainage and would have ended up standing in water so it had to go! I chopped a fair few branches off it, The leaves are turning now so i'm hoping for a good flush of green next year! I stood it in the glass so I could see any water but it's out of it now!! john |

Thanks for the feedback guys. I quite like brooms, so wanted to make sure I'm not jumping to that as default decision when there might be better options. Letting the tree dictate - yes that's a good point, I'm going to let it grow a bit anyway, so will see if it pops buds anywhere useful. |

To make a little nicer broom style, I would just let the crown extend outwards some so it's wider- It would suit the stubby trunk John |
