Hi all

I bought this £30 Pine (Been told recently it's a Mugo!) from the Bonsai bootsale at Doncaster a couple of years ago, It has very bad inverse taper below the noggin where another trunk or branch was removed!, There's also handlebar branches all the way up!

A couple of days ago I found a bit of old sandstone and cut a rounded recess in to it and buried it slightly pressed up to the tree (Cheating??!!), Last night I jinned the bar branches but looking at it now, I think the jins need to go along with the bottom right hand branch due to the leaning angle of the tree, Thre bottom two look like a bar branch too!
From the front..

And the rear, I pushed compost in to the gaps, I think i'll remove it though as it may hurt the tree being damp all the time!

The jins..

And a view from the rear..

This may give an indication to the size of the tree, Should I remove the bottom right branch and jins?

PS, Should the rock go too or stay?

Why isn't the bottom pic the front? You can wire the apex forward.

That way the tree is immediately a "root over rock".

Can you post a pic showing it from that side similar to the last pic you posted "for size"?

From the otherside it looks like you just plopped a rock in front of the tree.

Here's how the jin's might look?

Then the second branch on the left must be pulled way lower. That allows you also to bring the apex forward and down.

I like what you've done.

And isn't bonsai all about cheating to get the look we like?

Hi Brendan, Thanks for your pov, I think you're right about turning it through 180°, It's actually leaning towards what was the front and is too stiff to pull back but the new growth at the crown will wire back easily towards the new front, The original front was open so the trunk could be seen and the rear was just a mass of needles, Now that it's opened the old rear up, I think it suits it more as a new front!, I still think I need to remove the bottom branch as it makes two branches at that side and they're too close together (It doesn't show as easily with photo's)

A chap on facebook said it was a mugo but I found pics from when I bought it (From a friend from South Yorkshire Bonsai society), It clearly said Scots Pine although the writing has faded altogether!!

It did well with a bit of Biogold on the surface and produced loads of candles which I pinched (I usually forget with Pines and end up with long straggly branches and just foliage at the tips!!)

Unfortunately I don't have a pic from the side, I'll take some tomorrow :smallthumb:

Albero, I feel like i'm really cheating covering that bad inverse taper though!

I was wondering that If I wrapped thickish wire tightly around the bottom and up to the noggin if it would speed up thickening (With gaps so it can start growing through!!)

Cheers, John
