Post subject:  Moss remover

Hi all, I have a few trees with moss growing up the trunk. I have tried to pick it off with tweezers but it is so time consuming. I can’t use a brush as it takes the bark of to. I keep reading about vinegar being used but have yet to try it. Does it work? What’s the solution mix? What type of vinegar? Will it not harm the roots & kill the tree? Any help with these questions will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I find a soft toothbrush does the job without being too aggressive on the bark.
Try it when the moss is dry and then wet as the results are often better one way than the other.

Whenever possible I try and avoid chemicals, man-made or natural.

Hi

Vinegar will kill moss, and can be used neat. If I use it I dilute it 50%

Although it is effective, you will still have to remove the moss, so is it really worth using?

Yes it is normal chip shop vinegar

I dilute any type of vinegar, use a toothbrush then water the soil to wash the vinegar out. Works well for me.

Yes at £7.95 looks like someone saw a business opportunity here for gullible bonsai enthusiasts. Vinegar is about £1.00 a bottle!!
As a precaution you can wrap the pot in cling film to stop the vinegar leaching into the soil.
