Post subject:  Can I use Hazel for bonsai

Hi All
I was given a hazel seedling last year by one of my wife's friends. It has survived my almost total neglect since and has actually some buds which look ready to pop. I don't recall ever seeing any reference to Hazel as bonsai material so I was wondering if anyone out there has any words of wisdom they would like to pass on.

Thanks

Yes you can, they aren't the best....... just google 'Hazel bonsai' and there are quite a few examples

The leaves are a bit on the large side, but never say never. :-)

I've been trying to ground grow some for about 5 years. Every time I prune them back they invest all their energy in throwing suckers. Great for making a hedge -not so easy to grow a trunk with movement it seems. Leaves are also large as already said. Personally I'm thinking of binning mine. Saplings are easy to get hold of for many better species so getting something different is at least an option worth considering.

Hi
I’ve posted this in the past but here is my Hazel. I decided that the ‘essence’ of a Hazel is a multi stemmed tree and set about creating this. I agree the leaves are a little on the large size but they will reduce a little. In many ways it’s the skeletal winter image I am happiest with. Excuse fern which I find pop up everywhere and I tend to leave until they are large enough to move.
It’s not had its annual trim yet.

I just killed mine - and it was beginning to develop really reduced leaves...

Thanks for your comments guys. Seems like it may not be a complete lost cause. I think I'll clip it back and stick it in a big pot or maybe in the ground for a year or two and see what happens with it.

Brendan - did you give any special treatment to get the leaves to reduce? Or was it the "special treatment" that killed it!

Nice! Life is so much easier when you go with the flow, something I need to remind myself often

I have 3 hazels. All of them were trees from hedgerows with trunks around 1 inch + and about 6 to 8 foot high. Chopped these down to the lowest bud and also a bit of thread grafting to get some branches where i wanted. They do have large leaves but on 2 of them the leaves are now about half size.will try and post a pic when on my laptop.
