As the title says, are there right and wrong times in general, or does it vary from species to species?

Yes, there are times when it is advisable, and less so. What tree do you want to wire? usually best to post a pic of the tree for discussion and advice.

Thanks Brendan, it was more of a general question as I was mooching round the garden the other day and wanting to start meddling again.

The books that I've got are generally a page per species and don't go into too much detail, I'll have to have a search around on the web for more info.

I like wiring now on deciduous trees - no leaves and the spring push is about to happen so the tree will recover quickly. Some trees are a little more brittle so be careful - I've managed to snap off a few fine branches on an elm I worked on today.

Particularly on deciduous trees it's about to get busy with repotting, styling and wiring as required. Beats mooching !

Thanks Gary, I might have a pop at my Hornbeam then.

It still has last years brown leaves on it, should I remove them before I start?

Yes, but be careful not to damage new buds when removing the old leaves.

Agreed. Be careful but it'll be much easier without leaves to see what you're doing. I have an annual autumn ritual of removing dead leaves (mostly on beech) so I can enjoy the winter images.

I'm looking at another one now, I have an Ilex that I'd like to tidy up a bit, is it ok to trim and wire that one now?
