In a month or so we'll be getting a standard poodle puppy, and I've been give the job of finding out what's poisonous in the garden.

So far I've found out that Yews can cause problems, but what precautions in general do I need to take?

Personally, I think puppies, like children, should be taught what they can and can’t do right from the word go. Chewing any plant is a No! You want to be able to enjoy your puppy AND your garden, without constantly wondering what the dog is doing. A few weeks hard work at the beginning will pay dividends for years to come.

Hi

As an owner of 3 cavalier king charles spaniels, I know your problem.

I have had to go to the vet after one of the dogs ate poisonlous plants.

A tip my vet gave me is keep some washing soda indoors. If your dog does eat something poisonoua get him to swallow some washing soda which will make him empty his stomach. You will still need to go to the vet though for a check up.

MOST garden plants are toxic, so as daryl says, teach your dog not to touch. Give them plenty of things they can chew especially as they go through the teething stage. Nylon bones are good.

Attached is a pdf file that may help.

Thanks Keith, hopefully by the time summer's here we'll have got her trained properly.

We used to have 3 cavalier king charles spaniels too, many years ago no. They were the best, lovely dogs

I could never repot with the dog in the garden.I stopped after my Ridgeback brought my newly potted olive to me in the lounge! I did not wire my trees in then or he would have brought the lot in.

He probably thought you were burying that stick for later, and was worried you might forget where you put it!
