Good Morning just looking to get opinion and advice to see if I could turn this into a bonsai. I’ve put it in a big pot to hopefully thicken the trunk I’ve had it for a year. Really like trees from the Acer family. I have an been learning with a Japanese elm for four years and would like to take a step up. Any thing to help I would really appreciate some guidance. |

Hi Winty. I'm not terribly familiar with Acer as bonsai because I've lived in coastal locations since I started - they don't like salt-laden winds is the sum total of my experience! But I would say that would make a nice subject. The 'closed leaf' style is one of my personal favourites - is that Shirasawanum, do you know? I had a quick squint around the interweb and it seems that William Valvanis has had success with these. I'm sure others with real experience will be along soon to help but in the meantime this site is worth a look - http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/A ... page2.html |

Hi Winty, firstly as you come up the trunk there are a few places where you have multiple branches coming off the same point. I would start by selecting which ones to remove and then carefully wire down the ones you want to use. If you are not too confident on wiring down branches do this before you cut the others off, that way if you snap one you can use another. Then maybe post another photo as we can then get a better idea. |

Hi Winty When "designing" a tree, it is a good idea to look at some trees in the wild. Look at their shape, what makes it look like a tree and not a lollipop. Then look at your potential bonsai and see what needs changing to get it nearer to a tree shape. It will mean that parts of it will need to be pruned, parts will need to be shaped. The outline should fit within a triangle shape. Read this :- https://www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/styling It would also pay you to go on a basic course (When covid permits) or join a bonsai club, as personal tuition is unbeatable. Have you checked the 'how to' section of this forum? Where in the world are you? There may be someone near you who can help. Put the town on your profile, as it helps people give more accurate information. Good luck with your acer |
