When is the best time of year to air layer a crab apple please? It's a shohin tree with a branch that's not needed (about 1cm in diameter) and rather than bin it, I'd thought I'd air layer it. I'm in the home counties and a relative air-layering novice. Thanks. |

The general advice is as soon as the leaves harden off (so April/May probably for a crab apple). Some people start earlier, around now and that seems to work as well. In simple terms the leaves produce the sugars and carbohydrates which drive root production at the layer site. So definitely when it's in leaf, if you start earlier you get more time in the season for the roots to grow. The discussion is simply whether you gain or lose anything by layering before the leaves are fully productive. |

Lovely, thanks. It's covered in opening leaves and buds are developing too (including on the bit I'm going to layer), so I might wait until its flowered and then layer it immediately after that. I probably won't let it fruit this year, to keep its strength up. |
