Here is one of the Crab apples I grew from seed, collected in November 2019 and overwintered in my fridge , then sown February 2020. I sowed seed from 3 varieties, Wild Crab, Red Sentinel and Golden Hornet and roughly 25 of each variety germinated. I've grown them on in the ground for the past year and I wired a few while still flexible to try to start developing some shape. I wonder how long I'll have to wait for them to flower?! https://ibb.co/JqTR6w8 https://ibb.co/pJmGNQj Sorry I still cant get IMGBB to display my photos on here!! |

They are very good germinators but I fear you will have quite a wait for flowers Daryl. I have the first few flowers on one I planted 15 years ago at the moment. Enormous excitement but oh what a wait. Still can’t resist collecting and planting seed though. |

Thanks Daryl and Sputnik. It puzzles me why Crab apples take so long to flower, whereas with the very closely related Eating Apples if trees are bought at one or two years old, it takes only two or three years before you can expect them to flower. Also Apples on dwarf rootstocks tend to flower sooner. Maybe the stunting effect of growing Crab apples in Bonsai pots is part of the reason, or do they behave the same when grown in the ground? Maybe I should buy some dwarfing rootstocks and experiment with grafting on to them! Ive certainly got plent of young plants to play with!! |

Most eating apples are grafted and the graft is taken from mature stock hence the tree’s ability to flower immediately. I have air layered crabs which bloomed the first year after removal but I’m still waiting for the seed grown ones ,even those that have been in the ground for several years. |

I must admit I gave up waiting for any of my seed and allotment grown ones to flower and bought one instead. |
