I have a healthy oak that was collected about 6 years ago and is vigorous and ready for the next phase of its development.

It needs a hard chop and I am thinking of doing that now.

I know that the dormant period is when a chop is usually done but I have also seen healthy trees suffer a wound and lose a branch and just back bud and get on with it. Like when you snap a branch off when over doing the wiring (he says sheepishly).

I think I agree with you Brendan. The flowing sap will divert and keep the rest healthy and stronger.
