For me Buxus is too slow and fussy to make it worth growing as Bonsai- life is just too short!!
I much prefer Lonicera nitida which is similar in appearance, much more forgiving and almost bomb proof,
and it roots very easily from large and small cuttings, like willow.

Strangely enough I don't get on too well with Lonicera.

I find Buxus are fine for tertiary twigging but a really slow pain for development. I agree lonicera are better in that regard although trunk development would take a long time.

Here are some Lonicera nitida Ive grown from cuttings

Trunk development need not take too long if you start with thick hardwood cuttings!
Even sections of 1 inch plus thick lonicera stems root very easily !- these 2 were among 20 cuttings I rescued from my neighbours hedge 3 years ago - I cut them to 12 inch lengths and planted them 4inches deep in my allotment in autumn and they were well rooted by the following spring. Trees for free!!

Impressive given that they have been grown from cuttings, well done.

Just been looking at your YouTube video on pot size. How is the box doing in the shallow pot you used?

Doing fine!

Previously had three rocks around it, to prevent birds from pecking into the soil.

Its certainly been a hard summer for the garden in general. All my growing/care efforts went into my bonsai but despite that I now find that the Buxus now has a touch of box blight. You just can't win.

The Buxus shown at the start of this thread is sitting in the green bin awaiting tomorrows collection, along with two box moth caterpillars that were munching away on it.

It didnt do much over the last couple of years despite my best efforts so out it goes.......
