For some years I have been admiring - and coveting - the four delightful small juniper (probably sabina) bushes in my neighbour's front garden, bordering the path. They were old, stunted, contorted and had really small fine growth. I suppose maybe around 40+ years old and less than two feet high. Over the past year or so I've kept meaning to say to the neighbour that if she ever wanted to get rid of them, to please let me know because I would really like to take them.

You know what I'm going to say now, don't you?

I got home from work yesterday to find that she'd had a 'tree surgeon' round to remove a willow tree, and while they were there they must have sawn all four junipers off at the base, flush with the ground.

Aaaaarggghhh!!!!!!!

Honestly, the times I've said to my mother-in-law that if she wants to get rid of any of the shrubs in her garden (or any of the innumerable hawthorn, rowan and field maple self-sown seedlings, please, please can she tell me about them rather than telling her gardener.

The last casualty was in the spring - a cotoneaster with an absolutely huge multi-trunk base. I told her: "Don't dig it up, I will so I can turn it into a bonsai". But no, she decided that there was no way I could convert an 8ft high monster into a tiny 'bonsai' tree, and hey presto, I turn up at her house to find it gone and some pelargoniums in its place.

Aaaargghhhh again!!!

Gutted for you! :1crybaby:

I was once watching an Oak, It was a fabulous tree growing on the old defunct railroad ramps from our company on to the main line, It was like a forest of mature silver Birch, I asked my foreman if I was ok to prep it for lifting the following spring, He gave me the nod so I stuck a spade in on two sides with a view to doing the same on the remaining two sides some weeks later..

One day I was in the amenity block when suddenly there were a stream of Whites demolition lorries full of earth with bits of broken trees sticking out :120ranting:

I ran round to the ramps and they'd removed the lot with an excavator, They eventually removed the lines too and put massive gates on the ramps to stop anyone accessing the railway property!

I farmer near me removed all his old fruit trees. In amongst the rows was an old oak that had grown there for like 50 years but every summer it was mowed down to about 6 inches. You can imagine how fabulous the trunk was. So I was going to collect it when suddenly they had taken a grader through the field...

However at the other end of the scale, I too was annoyed at not asking a neighbour for a Hawthorn. The up side is that I lifted the trunk stub and now after a few years its one of my best bonsai.

just as an antidote to all these tragedies.

I work in a hospital, at the rear is a large area, several acres untouched for, i would say 25 years or more.

The only attention it gets is to be mowed to about 8-12 inches 2 maybe 3 times a year. There are lots of oaks, silver birch etc. all old, and all cut to this sort of height, so far i have had 4 birch and 3 oaks!

They take a bit of digging out, but it's worth it.
