Morning all

This wont be new news to all but maybe will make others think.

Videos and write-ups online about thickening up trunks by letting branches grow but nothing on how you can use these "sacrifice" branches to make new and interesting trees

An example. Im thickening up an old mountain maple bonsai by letting the trunk extend taller, they grow fast. Instead of eventually chopping off the "sacrifice" i have pre-wired it along with 2 other offshoots to hopefully create a triple trunk bonsai, i have already put some nice twists and turns in to make it an interesting example. Will just need to air layer in spring

Black pines are another tree where folk talk about "sacrifice" branches a lot, seems a waste.

Anyone else along the same lines?

Yes I think air layering is always worth trying if the sacrifice branches have potential for new bonsai .It always seems a shame to waste those years of growth!!

It's also a good idea to air layer the leader off a potensai before the reduction cut is made to a valuable plant.

Sometimes you don't need/want another tree or the sacrifice isn't interesting enough (by accident or design) to make a new tree. Think of it as a form of pruning and it's not so bad. In the end you just want to focus on a few good trees.

Hi Gary,

True, one time in the past i got tired of having lots of young seedlings/saplings hanging about, so tired in fact that i just took them to some spare land behind where i work and just planted the lot haha

Sold a number of trees on Ebay over the years too, always had it in the back of my mind to hopefully own my own bonsai nursery one day but its never going to happen, still, its always on my mind to maybe sell a few.

Moved house a few years ago and now have a garden thats a bit bigger so its sparked more interest with starter trees

Also, when you look on Ebay at some of the prices, even for small trees, it makes sense. Folk asking stupidly ridiculous prices, saw one the other day for £400!!, worth no more than £80 tops. Suppose its up to folk what they ask though.

So with a few things to consider, seems its the road im heading down at the moment.

Bonsai seems very popular these days,

Its an interesting subject alright. One of those situations where if you had enough time, space and inclination, you could desire from stock. However, there are certain species which don't air layer easily. Plus, sometimes it just easier to let a branch go wild and do its own thing. Then again, there is the time where you may not want the sacrifice to get too thick as it will leave a big scar which will take years to heal.
