My birch trees growing tips open with red leaves is it lack of nitrogen? Do I need to feed at a higher ratio? Or is this completely normal? My other trees seem happy with the same feeding regime, are birch particularly heavy feeders? I've had the tree several years but it never seems completely happy and I think it's the feed or maybe pH unless the red tips is normal

Hi Ryan, my birch is now in full leaves and they've been all green from the off. I wouldn't worry too much at this stage as i find that the lack of chlorophyll is not uncommon with young leaves and often fixes itself soon after. Plus it's hard to pinpoint the issue when it's spring. For example, i have 3 young oaks growing - all same age - all from the seeds o the ame tree - all in teh same soil mix. 1 has red ish young leaves, the other 2 are fully green.

Try adding some liquid iron to your feed then. I do!

Seen this before on Oaks and also white colouring on Elms but the green has always kicked in soon enough. Best of luck with your birch.

Downy birch does this sometimes. I have a couple and have never found it to be an issue.
