Hi, I've got a Chinese quince that I dug from my garden. It's been in a pond basket for a year and a half. A few months back I noticed a bit of flaking of the bark, but today I noticed that it has a severe case of rot running all around the trunk. The remaining foliage and buds look normal though. It's not a piece of material that I'm particularly fond of but I've never seen anything like this before. I suppose it'll make a feature or kill the plant. Any ideas what could have caused this?

My view is assume the worst. Find a way to keep it as dry as possible. Cut out and discard the affected parts plus a margin. Then treat it with a good fungicide and repeat in a few weeks.

Its roots probably never recovered from transplant shock after you dug it .
If the top is still live it might be worth considering ground or air layering it above the section of rot? or take some cuttings from healthy shoots.
If as you say you're not particularly attached to it this might be worth a try - after all what have you got to lose?
