Post subject:  How to propagate Mulberry

Can anyone here advise on the best methods for propagating from a mature Mulberry Morus alba growing in a nearby garden?
The owners want to fell it for safety reasons and have applied for planning permission .
I would like to take cuttings and or airlayer from it and Im looking for advice for maximising success
eg timing methods and maximum size of cutting/ layers?
Any tips would be most welcome!

Hi

You are likely to get the most success with air layers, but it will take time. if you are going to do it do it now as it is getting late in the year.

it is likely going to take 6 to 8 weeks.

you could also try putting cuttings in water, and keeping the water topped up until roots appear. DO NOT change the water, just top it up as re;quired

Thanks Keith ,
Ive looked more closely at the Mulberry tree and its an old multi trunk about 25 foot high with very few easily accessible branches, which makes air layering tricky as without using a long ladder the only branches I can reach are low- hanging or horizontals.
Ive just done some more research and apparently the commercial sericulturalists grow mulberry on a big scale to feed the silkworm industry -Silkworm caterpillars eat White Mulberry leaves.
The growers recommend planting thick hardwood cuttings like broom handles planted to half their depth, as they say they root as easily as willow and thicker cuttings have more energy for rooting which is encouraging!
Im not sure when would be the optimum time to collect cuttings? The tree is likely to be felled later this autumn so perhaps I should wait till its felled? Have we got any UK nursery growers on here who can advise?
