Please could someone tell me what pesky blighter might be making holes in the dead wood of my honeysuckle bonsai? Was surprised to find a pile of sawdust and a rather large hole in it. I poked a stick in and nothing came out should I fill it with a cut paste and is there a way of preventing it from occurring again?

Is this something that I shouldn't be too concerned about? I've checked again today it's not getting any worse and there is still nothing in there.

There are several possible culprits either beetle or wasp type, they usually only choose soft or wood that is going rotten.

Check how hard the surrounding wood is and it needs be use a wood hardener. Honeysuckle isn't the hardest anyway and can get soft in areas.

If you aren't sure if anything is in there, just submerge it for a few hours and then anything will be gone. Make sure they haven't left any larva.

Most likely there had been some species of moth or beetle larvae feeding inside. As you can see a clear exit hole that means it has now completed its feeding and development , chewed its way out and the adult insect has now emerged and flown away, to start a new generation somewhere else.
There is no harm in you now plugging the hole if you want to prevent woodlice or other creepy crawlies from using it as a hotel!
