I’ve heard that oak are difficult to air layer but this odd little tree has a strange bend at the to which had to go so I decided that I had nothing to lose.

Air layers are not my strong point but I have had some success on a hawthorn recently. I find the hardest bit is holding everything in place while you wrap it and secure the plastic. This bent branch is almost horizontal so I thought a plant pot might be easier but how would I keep the soil in? Then I had this idea to use a cut off plastic bottle and it worked a treat.

Now for the long wait.

Has anyone else successfully layered an oak?

Never layered an oak and not had any success with plant pot or bottle........ but good luck. If water can get in at the top make sure it can get out the bottom, but keep the moss damp and compressed again the cut section. :201thumbup:

It was certainly much easier to get the sphagnum packed tightly into the bottle than when I have tried with just polythene. It’s fairly well sealed at the top but I have left the bottle lid exposed at the bottom so I can unscrew it and let water out if needed.

Very creative. Well done. I nearly always use pots myself for structure (keeping it all together) and it works nicely. This is a similar idea. Hopefully it'll take for you.

I checked it today and it needed a bit of water so I must make sure I keep an eye on it now that the weather is warming up.

Useful technique. I had trouble with blackbirds pecking through the plastic and taking the moss last year.

I really like your solution - will copy it on an odd Chelm I am puzzling over.

As that is a "sealed" container, I would consider using cat litter/substrate instead of moss. Guaranteed to get the substrate right up tight against the cut. Might also poke a hole or 2 in the bottle for drainage and welcome any water coming in from the top.

Substrate choice is full of pros and cons, isn’t it? Using the bottle this way made it easy to get good contact between the sphagnum and the cut. I’m never sure about the moisture retention. Moss can hold too much, moler maybe not enough so 50:50 would probably be a good option.

And yes, I made some drainage holes at the bottom :smallthumb:
