I have to repot about 60 trees this spring, some very big and some that are very much rootbound. This is going to take a huge amount of time and effort.

I am thinking of making an early start and doing some of the trees that need less work and will be less disturbed about now.

In Kent we haven't had any cold weather yet, so dormancy may not have taken effect in all my trees.

Too early to start?

Although spring is the very best option tbh I think the risk is very small. Many people do early repotting and if you get a pot breakage at any time of year you repot and the tree survives (in my experience). Only sensitive trees if you get a hard frost are likely to suffer IMHO and you're probably protecting them anyway. I'm thinking about it myself and in my mind I've thought "start in early February".

Whenever you do it, it's all about the after care and protection.

SO........... if you have a polytunnel or unheated greenhouse you can usually start earlier with most species. The best time is when the buds start to swell, but it all depends on the amount of root work you are planning to do.

I was given this Beech raft (Along with thirty odd other trees!) by a friend in 2013, The friend needed a large pot for another tree so I said he could have this 20" Walsall Ceramics pot back when I repotted it (It's not been repotted in the 14/15 years i've had it!

I got it out a week ago and decided to repot it last wednesday so I could take it to give him on the first club meet of the year the following day..

When I got it to the bench for the repot a lump off the end just fell away in two pieces! :1crybaby:

I let him know what had happened and asked if he still wanted it, He was really happy as he had bought a kintsugi kit and has been itching to put it to good use!!

After he jet washed it he found two large cracks that ran between the drain holes and to the centre of the broken part! :132doh:

I also have loads of trees to repot this spring, Not just Bonsai too, Quite a few patio trees in pots!, Also, At least ten trees that have been in the ground for several years too! :20help:

Sorry, Can't post pics as they're too big

Maybe I can post links to the host sites ::dunno:
