This is an Oak that i dug up last Aug/Sept time 2008. I'm thinking of using that long branch at the top as the new leader but does anyone have any other suggestions? |

this looks like many of my trees hehe, sticks in pots with hopefully a great future. I would use the long top as a new leader and give it some years and see what happens. |

No - forget the leader. This material has lots of future, but the lack of taper and uninteresting nature of the upper trunk make it unsuitable as a taller tree. This is nice shohin material - with very nice lower movement. The top 1/2 to 2/3rds needs to be removed at the lowest right branch (or just above). |

Take a look at this recent post from Walter Pall - showing development of a not dissimilar tree. http://walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.com/ ... pment.html |

And don't chop TOO close to the small branch you are trying to preserve - as die-back can occur. As Don said, when you make the chop, look very closely at the angle of the cut. It's important that the angle blends with any movement in the trunk. |

Don, there is always the option of creating deadwood above the branches you inyend to keep, instead of lime sulphuring the deadwoood you could torch it & treat with deadwood preserver. |
