Hi, OK so here are my first couple of questions. I kept a Bonsai, Chinese elm for about 18 months, but then it died. On looking at it and reading your posts I think it had been cut from a larger tree as it from from a market stall and I don't think it was grown correctly.I now wish to purchase a new one from someone who knows and cares about growing them correctly. Could you advise the best type for a beginner? I live in a flat so has to be an indoors type. It gets quite warm here too. Are some more suitable than others? Had a look around a nursery today, but a lot of their smaller trees still have the 'stump' on a branch, does that always mean they have been cut from an older tree? Thanks for you ideas, J |

you will find that all smaller size indoor trees have been grown and then cut - as this is how they are produced in china. As with many things - the more you spend the better quality you get, you should be able to find nicely grown Chinese elms for £25 mark that are grown more considerately. Where abouts are you in the UK - you would be best to goto a bonsai specialist as to have a choice from hundreds of trees rather than choosing from a handful at a local nursery or garden centre. |

Hello, thanks for the advice. I'm in Hampshire UK. It's just my flat has large west facing windows and can get very warm in the summer months, with sun streaming in from about 4pm onwards. Hope this information helps you. Thanks J |

Hi thanks for the advice, I do like the smaller leaf trees. This bonsai supplier is fairly close to me http://www.bonsaitreessouthampton.co.uk/ thoughts on them please? How about their advice on keeping indoor trees, do you agree? I only ask as I bought my only one from a market and think it was a bad choice. I remember their advice being similar to these, but I may very well be mistaken. Their Elms were £10. ( I will be paying more this time don't worry!) If not the one you suggest is not too much further. Is there anything to look for on the tree and avoid? Probable going this weekend to look/buy. Many thanks, J |

Hi jaycat, I have purchased 2 bonsai from the place you mention very recently, I haven't been to their premises, I arranged with them to bring some trees to one of the Xmas Markets they were selling at. I'm zillions of miles away from any other suppliers and have minimal transport available to me. You might want to look closely for any wiring damage before you buy. My trees from them have a teeny bit, but not enough for me to worry about. Melody, |
