Last year i brought a trident off a club member. After i had it home for about 3weeks i noticed some sort of larvae. I couldn't really decipher what they were. In the end i convinced myself they were Lady bird larvae and my tree did not show signs of ill health through out the year. With the cold snap we had of late i put the trident in the garage during the worst of it. When i brought it back out i noticed some more larvae. They quickly made their way back under the medium. I tried to get a picture tho you'd have to have amazing eyes to see what they are. I was going to air layer the tree this year (all being well). If i re-potted the tree come early spring ( to rid the larvae) should i leave air layering to the following year or will the tree be strong enough to carry out an air layer??? I've posted a picture but i'm not expecting anyone to able to see or confirm what the larvae is.. Cheers Lee |

Hi Lee, i would be interested to the outcome of your findings, i would certainly have a poke around & try to see what they are. |

To be honest Don i never actually saw them turn into lady birds nor did i see any around the tree. What i did see was a larvae that looked like lady bird lavae. What i have now maybe the stage b4 what i had previously seen? I dont know to be honest. All i know is there are 100s of them. Maybe things will become clearer when i re-pot it. |

Hi Lee, if it were mine i would bare root it & re-pot. i bare rooted this acer last january & planted it in 100% s/pink & had a good growing season. |

I think i'll do just that Roy . I'll re-pot it into a mix of S/P and some smooth and corse gravel as i intend to do with all my maples. |

well i re potted it today. to my delight i didn't find any bugs/larvae hiding amongst the roots. I didn't bare root it tho. But i had a good scrape around and its getting the all clear from me. It will get a dose of provado soon for good measure. |
