Yeah and that is a relatively common one in the DIY stores. If the conditions are right it will go mad soon enough. I had one in similar sad state when I bought it. First season it didn't do an awful lot of growing but after that it threw shoots all over the place.

Suckers do come from the base/roots, and that's where I thought it originated on yours. 4 inches up?! That's the power of illusion in photography for you. I'm looking at it now and still imagining it coming from the base.

The conservatory is fine. Don't put it outside until about May when the nights warm up though. I put mine outside March, and by April it had browned all its other leaves off before making a recovery and a half in full sun. It stayed outside this winter though and has been fine, despite the prolonged cold. It did start wilting a bit towards the end of the fortnight freeze, but when it thawed it perked up immediately. Below is pictured in March, and then again in November. It's worth remembering that the tree was pruned and pruned and prund. One branch I let grow to 2.5 ft in a few months! You can see the amount of suckers I left on to thicken up the roots and base of my tree. They grow profusely, and for that can also lend themselves quite well to the clump form.

These are also fantastic for taking cuttings from. In the height of the summer I took 7" softwood cuttings and planted them in pots in the shade, and placed half a coke bottle over them - 100% success in striking new roots!

A word of warning though; the wood is prone to rotting as it is soft, and I beg you on bended knees to please watch wiring. The tree thickens so quickly, wire bites in very fast. My lowest branch has a horrible scar from it.

I would suggest repotting it. Any chinese ligustrum that a diy store has almost killed has got pot bound then got too dry.

Then once you have repotted it you can put it back in your conservatory, but if you have somewhere warmer it will start to regrow sooner.
