Has anyone got any idea how to force budsto open. This sweet chestnut was grown from a chestnut about 7 years ago but the branches just seems to be getting longer. It buds ok but the only buds to open are the ones on the end of the branches not the ones further down.

Never had a chestnut but I can imagine it is similar to other flowering trees which have a tendency to only bud at the ends of the branches (flowering cherry for example). I would recommend that towards the end of the season you cut the branches back to where you want secondary branches to form. That way budding will occur closer to the trunk giving you a more compact image.

I'm sure someone with experience of chestnuts will be along soon.

No experience of s/chestnut, (not related to horse chestnut), but I agree with SP's basic view. Chop it right back - force it to bud out from the lower parts of the branches by simply removing its option in the upper parts.

I have never seen, to my knowledge, a bonsai sweet chestnut. If I recall correctly without the book to hand, they are Fagacae - same as beech and oak - so probably quite slow growing. Lovely trees in the wild, glorious twisted/corkscrew bark up the trunk - quite unique, a tree spotter's delight - so why no potted ones? leaves too big?

EDIT: Incidentally, Don, looking at your photos again, I know you said you grew this from a chestnut, but I think the leaves should be a lot more toothed than that for a s/c. Is this a variety?

No experience with sweet chestnut, so just a suggestion.
Have a look at bonsai4me. There is an article on Beech pruning and ramification that may well help. Basically it advises to remove all but the terminal leaf on each shoot, which induces the tree to elongate the weak shoots further back on the branch. Seeing that your chestnut and beech are in the same family, it may well work.

Thanks, i'll have a look at that. In the second pic you can clearly see buds but they never seem to open. I'm sure i read somewhere that if you put a nick in the bark just above the bud it would help but i'm not sure

Hi Don, Its strange but I've been looking at a tree almost identical to your's this very day. Grown from seed started 16 year's ago, I'm afraid they just will not ramify. You can get the leaf size down, but that's about all, I'm afraid some specie's of tree are just not suitable for bonsai. The owner of the tree keep's it for sentimental reason's as it was one of his first attempt's at bonsai.

Regard's Molly.

Beautiful leaves! Should, I agree, be sweet chestnut. Castanea sativa I think. J.
