Post subject:  pruning Acers

Hi all, the info i have come across seems to suggest that the best time to branch prune Acers is in the middle of the growing season or within one week of the leaves dropping off. Is this a hard fact? Has anyone branch pruned at this time of the year (spring) etc
Apologies for bringing up this topic again as I'm sure its been covered many times.

Roy i know they are put off till late summer as the bleed heavily in the spring.

If root trimmed before pruning it can slow the bleeding apparently.

I pruned an old Acer Palmatum around this time last year without ill effect. I removed all minor branches and leaf buds in order to force branch regrowth. It worked out fine.

Certainly with Acer Campestre - you can prune those whenever the urge takes you...

thanks Jerry & Don, this is the tree, which i have just re-wired & whilst i want the trunk to thicken, i would also like to get some ramification whilst i'm waiting. so i would like to take the growing tip out of some of the branches to help carry that out.

Yes it is. It's an Atropurpureum.

You know i looked at the leafless tree and thought it did not look that great but once the leaves are on it looks far better

my suggestion is prune back really hard and allow the ramification to build up closer to the trunk which in turn will give you a smaller leaf size

the leaf only bears a passing resemblance to the norway maple but i dont think you would have gotten the ramification on that thats there already with one of those brutes.

If you really want trunk girth its gonna have to go in the ground for a few years but this will give you a better tree in the longer term
