Thanks for all the reassuring comments, tomorrow i will trim the branches back to where i want the back budding to start. I'll seal the cut ends too. Its also good to get an identification of the tree.

These red ones grow VERY slowly. Apparantly has something to do with the low amounts of chlorophyll in the leaves (thus the red colour)...

its worth me mentioning that this tree was planted in 100% sophisticat pink on 8-1-09 & fed every 2 weeks throughout the growing season on a 7-7-7 fertiliser.

Worry not, John! I'll happily volunteer to continue your legacy. All I need now is a dodgy solicitor with a love of brown envelopes and a cheap life insurance policy... ;)

well as this tree is an experiment for me to see how acers grow in cat litter i thought i would bare root it again after just one year. the root mass is excellent & as i want this tree to fill out no healthy roots were removed.

I also noticed some root rot where organic matter was still clinging to the nebari so out of the pot it came again. some rotting roots have been removed as has any organic matter that was tightly packed in the nebari area & back it went into s/p cat litter.

i also pruned back some of the small branches & sealed the ends with cut paste.

Roy. Will you keep this under protection untill the spring?

Or are you happy to leave it outside?

hi Lee, it will certainly stay in the garage for now as i want the cut paste to dry & i also have a sever weather warning for next week with -12c forcast, if thats the case i may move several of my trees that i have already re-potted back into the garage subject to the weather confirmation.
